Why use a Birth Doula?
Birth is an important day in your life. A Doula helps you labor with less stress, more comfort, and speedier progress.
What is a Birth Doula?
- A doula supports women and their families in achieving the birth that they desire.
- Doulas attend births in hospitals, homes, and birthing centers.
- A doula provides continuous physical comfort, emotional support, and information to women during labor
- A doula does not replace the partner’s role during childbirth; she provides guidance for the partner as needed
- A doula supports the woman’s decisions and does not force her own viewpoint
What is an Epi-Doula?
- Supports women receiving an epidural.
- Assists with position changes in bed so labor progresses normally.
- Assists with pushing (our goal is 30 minutes or less)
- Assists with initial breastfeeding.
- With our assistance, interventions are decreased.

How your partner benefits:
Remember, this is a special time for you and your partner. Your partner most likely does not have specialized training in assisting a woman through labor. You need your partner to be there emotionally for you, holding your hand and reassuring you, a doula will help your husband know what to do. Why should your partner be stressed and worried about being able to adequately assist you in labor? Your partner will already be anxious and worried about your safety. If you have a 16, 24, or 36 hour labor, how is your partner going to assist you after birth, and help take care of your new baby when exhausted? You are going to need rest. You will need your partner even more after birth. This alone is a good reason to hire a Doula.
What if I Plan on Having an Epidural?
A doula can still play an important role in the delivery and birth. You will need continuous physical and emotional support until & after you receive the epidural. At times epidurals may only take partially. Once you receive your epidural, the doula helps with in bed positioning to keep the labor progressing. She also assists with relaxation techniques, support for the partner, answers questions, assists with pushing and initial breastfeeding.
